How we approach accessibility on this website
We want this website to work for as many people as possible. This page sets out our approach, the accessibility features we have built in, and how to give us feedback or report a problem.
Our approach
We have built this site with accessibility in mind and we work towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at AA level. We can’t promise that every part meets every criterion, and some features need JavaScript to work fully (see below). We treat accessibility as ongoing, and we would rather hear about a problem than have you struggle with it.
Accessibility features
A “Skip to main content” link is the first thing a keyboard or screen reader user reaches, so they can jump past the navigation straight to the page content.
Keyboard access
The site can be used with a keyboard. Buttons and the interactive news cards respond to Enter and the spacebar, and pop-up dialogs close with the Escape key.
Text size
You can change the text size using your browser’s zoom or text size controls, and the layout adjusts to suit.
Alternative text for images
Images carry descriptive alternative text so screen readers can convey what they show.
Heading structure
Pages use proper HTML headings to describe their structure, so assistive technology can move from heading to heading.
Clear links and labels
Links and buttons are labelled so they make sense on their own. Where a link reads simply “Read more”, it carries a longer description for screen readers naming the article it opens.
Colour and contrast
We have checked text and background colour combinations for contrast, and we do not rely on colour alone to carry meaning.
Known limitations
Some parts of this site, including the news articles and division detail, are loaded and displayed using JavaScript. If JavaScript is turned off in your browser, those sections will not appear. We are being open about this rather than claiming the whole site works without scripts.
Questions and feedback
If you have any difficulty using this site, or you have feedback for us, we want to hear from you. Please use the Get in touch form on this site and we will do what we can to help.
